When I was teaching my boys to read, I was looking for CVC-based reading that would not overwhelm them with sight words. (CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant word patterns. Words such as “cat, bat, mat, sun, bun and so on would be CVC words.) I was surprised at how hard this was to find. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, so I created what I couldn’t find in my library or online. I am so happy to share these IM Word Family Worksheets with you!

Each worksheet is designed to help build confidence so that your child can read the story when they are ready!

When using any reading program I have found some simple steps to take, and they will work great for these worksheets too.

• Day 1- First, start by reading the story to your child.
• Day 2- Next, You read a word and the child reads the same word
• Day 3- Then, “Echo” reading, where you are both reading the sentences at the same time
• Day 4- Finally, time to see if your child can independently read the story.

Take it slow, one worksheet a day is just fine. Print the worksheets on cardstock and laminate them for years of fun to come! We enjoy using letter tiles, or EXPO markers to build these simple CVC words.
