Here are some tips to help you teach your child to read:
Start with the alphabet, and make sure your child has mastered it. Then focus on learning letter sounds. This can take a while, and should not be rushed. Once your child has learned the letter sounds, focusing especially on vowel sounds, move onto CVC words. CVC words are words with a consonant, vowel, consonant sound pattern. Now that your child knows their letter sounds they can easily put together CVC words. Focus on CVC words until they have been mastered. (This can take a while, but take your time going through each vowel word family.) Then eventually you can move on to sight words, but they should not be the focus when teaching your child to read.
