Understanding rhymes and rhyming is essential to becoming a good reader. Rhyming helps your child understand patterns within words. Help your child build a strong reading foundation by singing silly rhyming songs, nursery rhymes, or whatever you can think of!
When teaching your child to read, your first step should be letter recognition, then letter sounds. Once your child knows their letter sounds they can begin to build simple CVC words. CVC words are words with a consonant, vowel, consonant pattern. Words such as BAG, RAG, SAG, BAT, MAT, CAT…etc are examples of CVC words. Do not expect your child to master the words in this decodable reader, as these words are not the focus. Right now, focus on making rhymes and understanding the patterns. Talk about why the words rhyme, do not focus on unusual word patterns or sight words in the beginning.

Any time you are working with a child who is learning to read use these methods to help them build confidence:
- Day 1-First, read the level appropriate story to your child (something that they could reasonable read on their own)
- Day 2-Next, you read the word, and they repeat the word while following along in the same story as day 1.
- Day 3-Then, you read the story while they are also reading it in a sort of “echo reading”
- Day 4-Finally, allow them the chance to read the story independently. Do not worry if they cannot read the story yet, keep practicing!
