Why are Short Vowel and Blended Word Families Important?
When teaching your child to read short vowel words are going to be your best friend for some time, CVC words to be exact. CVC words are words that follow a consonant, vowel, consonant letter pattern. Words such as CAT, MAT, BAT and so on are CVC words. I went about creating a huge list of these words, plus blended words with short vowel patterns. I am excited to tell you that I have a download in my shop with over 90 lists of these words! But first, what are the different types of word patterns and word family patterns?
What Are the Different Types of Word Patterns and Word Families?
There are several word patterns and word family groups. I have focused mainly on CVC words up till this point in a lot of my shop resources. But the truth is there are several word patterns. Besides CVC words, there are also CCVC words. Words such as SLAM, SNAP, STOP are all examples of CCVC words. CV words such as AT, AN, AS, OR. CVCC words would be words like PING, RING, BING. Whew, those can sure get confusing.
There are many more word patterns and word family groups that I do not discuss in this post, however the ones I listed can be found here! They’re organized as well as I could possibly do, so here goes, and I sure hope I didn’t miss any!
Here is the most common word patterns that you will come across here. (Remember that V=Vowel and C=Consonant)

Rhyming words are also important when teaching your child to read. Most of resources in the shop are only to get your child used to rhyming, not that they should be able to read these rhyming words when just beginning their reading journey. Check them out by clicking the picture above.
Using Blended Word Families When Teaching Your Child to Read
Generally your child will not need to know blended words until well into first grade…and even then, it’s fine for them to take their time. (After all, that’s the great thing about homeschooling right?) However, once your child knows all their cvc words and letter sounds, they can move on to focusing on beginning blends and combining them into blended words! I also have a few of those in my shop!
How to Use Short Vowel and Blended Word Families When Teaching Reading
Allow your child plenty of time to master these words. CVC words are so important when teaching your child to read. Start with short vowels a,e,i,o,u. Once your child knows all their letter sounds, they can move on to CVC words! Stories with CVC words and few sight words should be your main focus. These can be difficult to find. However, I have created a whole shop around these types of stories and worksheets! Check them out here!
